Crescendo Staff Conference 2023

Zhe days from October 19-22were an extraordinary weekend with about 40 Crescendo leaders and key staff and staff from Europe, North and South America and (via Zoom) from Africa and Asia. The venue was Malmö, Sweden. We met at Hyllie Park Church and the beautiful home of artists Eva and Janeric Johansson. We talked a lot about our Crescendo experiences and goals. It was very encouraging. We took new steps in planning for 2024 and beyond. We had wonderful musical contributions from classical and jazz. We prayed and praised God together. And finally, we were invited by the congregation to do a "Creative Church" service on Sunday morning.

Crescendo Summer Institute 2023

Over 300 people from 32 countries came to the "Crescendo Summer Institute", amongst them around 200 students and 40 faculty members and then wonderful staff and volunteers.

The teacher for baroque music, Jan Katzschke: "What a time it was! 300 highly motivated participants; in my case, a fabulous baroque course with many aha experiences of my students and a highly committed baroque orchestra; inspiring concerts, as a crowning glory at the end Brahms' 1st Symphony; warm encounters with many old and new friends; deep and funny conversations deep into the night...Above all, however, the truly unique atmosphere of mutual acceptance and appreciation that characterised every minute. Congratulations to the leadership team for an admirably smooth organisation. Not a classic "master class", but one that, in addition to the musical impulses, had the whole person in mind."

Franz Mohr 1927-2022

Steinway concert technician Franz Mohr, without whom Wladimir Horowitz never gave a concert, died in the night from Sunday March 27 to Monday in New York. He was born in 1927 near Düren in the Rhineland and began his piano tuning career in Germany before emigrating to New York in 1956, where he became chief concert technician for Steinway & Sons within a few years. In addition to Horowitz, the pianists he supervised included Glenn Gould and Arthur Rubinstein. Mohr recorded his memories in several books and on recordings, which, in addition to many entertaining anecdotes, provide information about the working methods of the greatest pianists of the late 20th century. Since 1995, he has worked primarily as a teacher of piano technique and, in collaboration with the international musicians' association Crescendo, as a much sought-after lecturer. His books have been translated into Japanese, Chinese, Latvian, Spanish, Russian and Swedish, among others. Franz Mohr was a close friend of Crescendo and member of our international board.

"The Crescendo Summer Institute is not only a place for gaining knowledge every day. It is also a place for community. As a bass player I have a chance to experience professionalism and being competent in multiple styles. Playing either Jazz or Beethoven it is my ongoing experience how colourful this programme is. I warmly recommend it to everyone!" (Simon János Tóth, double bass, HUNGARY)

"For me Crescendo began to be a summer tradition that I’m waiting the whole year for. It’s my 4th time. I was so excited to be back this year and see all of my friends, play in the symphony orchestra and have fantastic lessons.
I love Crescendo because besides music I can focus on really important things in life and I always have someone to talk about it. At Crescendo, I can continue learning how to combine being a musician and growing in faith." (Dorota Kolinek, viola / Warsaw)

Ning Kam (viola teacher, London), wrote:
"The "Crescendo Summer Institute" was a real revelation and a refreshing experience for me. It isn't every day that one can say that one went to a music festival and came away refreshed in the Spirit! I enjoyed the small group meetings the most and I know that I'm certainly not alone in saying this, having spoken to a few of my new friends there. I was telling everyone that Crescendo is so refreshingly different from the usual music festival in that the usual "secular" music festival involves shameless name-dropping and posturing for the advancement of one's career while at Crescendo, you can have meaningful conversations with others right from Day 1, conversations in which you are enough just as a human being (in Christ or not, as the case may be!). That is rare. And so precious."

Feedback "Crescendo Sommerinstitut"

Josef Hussek
